I has actually been to Asakusa many times and has always thought of Asakusa cuisine as affordable and cheap food for the common people, such as Asakusa ningyo-yaki and Asakusa snacks. However, the only restaurant that I truly recommends as delicious and worth trying is the century-old Asakusa Imahan, famous for its sukiyaki. This time, I decided to explore the alleys of Asakusa and unexpectedly discovered a dessert that was so delicious and worth recommending to everyone – the “Asakusa Silk Pudding (浅草シルクプリン/Asakusa silk pudding)”. So, in this post, I shares this dessert with all of you who also love pudding.

Asakusa Silk Pudding (Asakusa SILK PUDDING) has three stores near Asakusa Temple, and the most convenient one that I visited this time is near the Kaminarimon Gate of Asakusa Temple. However, because the store is not on the popular Nakamise Shopping Street, it is easy to miss. If you want to find it, just follow the navigation, turn left after passing through the Kaminarimon Gate, and then turn right into the first small alley and walk straight for a while.

Price and Flavor of Asakusa Silk Pudding

The Asakusa Silk Pudding has recently become well-known, not only because it has been featured on many famous Japanese TV shows, but also because it has been selected as one of the seven best puddings recommended by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. This pudding specialty store sells more than ten kinds of pudding, and its biggest feature is the silky smooth texture that melts in your mouth. Its tenderness surpasses that of the Nara Daibutsu Pudding, which was originally one of the top few delicious puddings in my mind, and it costs around 450 to 580 yen per piece.

There are various flavors of pudding, including Asakusa Silk Pudding (original), Classic Pudding, Chocolate Pudding, Coffee Pudding, Cheese Pudding, Matcha Pudding, Strawberry Pudding, Crème Brûlée Pudding, Black Sesame Pudding, and Premium Silk Pudding (original).

Premium Silk Pudding (Deluxe Edition) 580 yen (including tax)

This time, I tried the signature “Deluxe Silk Pudding (Premium Silk Pudding)” (left) and mango-flavored pudding (right). I highly recommend the Deluxe Silk Pudding, which has a noticeably different texture compared to the regular version or other puddings from Japan. The regular version is quite ordinary.

The deluxe version of silk pudding is made with Hokkaido milk that has been sterilized at low temperatures and aged vanilla. It also uses premium eggs from Okuizumo, with only the yolk used to make the deluxe version of silk pudding. Throughout the process, no preservatives or additives are added. Not only is it healthier, but the silky texture and slightly elastic texture of the pudding is different from regular pudding. It really gives a very exaggerated “melt-in-your-mouth” feeling, and the caramel at the end is not too sweet or greasy.

The regular version of mango-flavored pudding is similar to the various local souvenir puddings commonly found in Japan, with the unique rich and silky texture of Japanese pudding. However, it is slightly more elastic than the luxurious version of silk pudding. I am not a fan of mango flavor, so I will not comment on the taste specifically.

Basically, the deluxe version of Asakusa silk pudding is quite amazing to eat, and it also brings a subtle sense of Japanese satisfaction. I truly believe that although this shop is not as famous or crowded as other Asakusa specialties, it is truly a must-try dessert and souvenir in Asakusa. If you like to collect containers, you can also choose to take the porcelain home after finishing the pudding!
