Takoya Dotonbori Kukuru: A Delectable Octopus Restaurant in Dotonbori, Osaka, Where Tamagoyaki Steals the Show

"Takoya Dotonbori Kukuru" in Dotonbori is a popular takoyaki shop in Osaka. In addition to their signature takoyaki with octopus legs, their akashiyaki is also delicious.

The “Takoya Dotonbori Kukuru(たこ家道頓堀くくる)” in Dotonbori is a super popular restaurant with long queues. Unfortunately, Flyer and Kukuru have never been lucky enough to try their famous takoyaki despite visiting five times. The staff always say the wait is at least 40 minutes, but who has time to wait that long for takoyaki to eat in? Finally, we decided to tough it out and wait, but by the time we got a table, the “startled takoyaki” with legs running out of it (“びっくりたこ焼”) had already sold out. Hey, it was only 1 pm, how could this happen? I just wanted to see what the takoyaki with legs looked like! In the end, we had to settle for ordering the akashiyaki, which turned out to be surprisingly delicious and refreshing! So, let me introduce this hard-to-get delicacy to everyone!

“Takoya Dotonbori Kukuru” Akashiyaki

たこ家道頓堀くくる明石燒

This is the delicious “Akashiyaki”, a local dish from Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture. It has been around since the end of the Edo period and is said to be the predecessor of Takoyaki. The cooking method is similar to Takoyaki, but the outer layer is made from egg batter instead of flour.

Therefore, the epidermis looks like a fried egg.

The octopus inside is also very big and chewy.

The way to eat it is to pair it with the hot broth provided by the store, and enjoy it by soaking it in the soup. It has a lot more eggs than takoyaki, so the outer layer is soft and tender, and when dipped in the broth, it’s amazing! I really love this flavor.

Is Takoya Dotonbori Kukuru delicious?

While I may not be a fan of the batter used in Kansai-style takoyaki, I absolutely love the soft and tender egg dish and the piping hot broth. That’s why compared to takoyaki, okonomiyaki is a dish that really hits the spot for me. Takoya Dotombori Kukuru serves one of the best okonomiyaki dishes I’ve ever had, and I highly recommend trying it if you have the chance to visit Dotombori. It’s truly delicious!
