Piao Er has tried nearly ten takoyaki stalls in Dotonbori, Osaka. She often saw the long queue in front of “Dotonbori Akaoni” when it was still located on Dotonbori. People always took photos with the Akashin doll on the signboard. She thought Akashin was just a gimmicky takoyaki stall. Now it has moved to a small alley, and although it is still popular, the queue is slightly shorter due to the less favorable location. Piao Er decided to give it a try and joined the queue.

Dotonbori Akaoni Menu & Prices
The signature dish of Akki in Dotonbori is “Takoyaki”. The most popular flavor is the original, but there are also variations such as soy sauce, spicy, salt, cheese, and more. When ordering, the theme song of Akki is constantly playing on the radio next to the stall, with the Japanese lyrics promoting “chappu chappu”. Takoyaki is the most popular dish at Akki in Dotonbori and highly recommended for everyone to try!
- Takoyaki: 8 pieces for 500 yen / 12 pieces for 760 yen
- Chapu Chapu with added broth: 6 pieces for 500 yen
- Lots of scallions: 7 pieces for 550 yen
After ordering, we watched the boss pour batter onto the takoyaki iron plate, add octopus, fry the takoyaki, and flip them over. We waited for about three to five minutes!
ちゃぷちゃぷ(Chapu Chapu)
The preparation of Dotonbori Akaoni’s chabochabu is similar to takoyaki, but the difference is that they also put the takoyaki in dashi broth, similar to Akashiyaki. However, it is not entirely made of egg batter and still has the texture of takoyaki.
The broth is really hot, be careful when eating.
The takoyaki cooked in dashi broth has a similar tendency to break apart as the traditional akashiyaki, but it tastes amazing when dipped in the broth. Although the octopus used in Akashiyaki from Dotombori Akashiya is larger than the one used in Akashiyaki from Akashiyaki Dotombori Kukuru, the chewy texture of the dashi broth is just as good as the akashiyaki from Akashiyaki Dotombori Kukuru!
About Dotonbori Akaoni
After trying the Akashiyaki at Dotonbori Akakichi, I realized that it was not just a gimmicky takoyaki shop. Plus, I love the batter balls that are typically used in dashi broth, so the texture of the Akashiyaki was perfect for me. It wasn’t as salty as traditional Osaka-style takoyaki, and I later found out that Dotonbori Akakichi was actually recommended by the Michelin Guide for three consecutive years from 2016 to 2018. It’s definitely well-deserved!
