If you are a fan of Japanese lifestyle, you may have heard of Matsuura Yataro, the founder of the Japanese “Baimono” movement. Matsuura Yataro is well-known for his taste in life and holds multiple identities such as the editor-in-chief of “Seikatsu Techo” and the owner of a second-hand magazine store. He grew up in Tokyo and would often come to Ginza for haircuts. Every time he visited Ginza, he would go to “Ginza West,” which was established in 1947, to have a ham sandwich. This restaurant, located in Ginza 7-chome, tells the story of the westernization of life in Japan during that era. If you want to experience various Tokyo styles, don’t miss out on this great restaurant!
How to Get to Ginza West West Ginza Main Store
“West Ginza Main Store” is a representative of high-end coffee shops in the hearts of Japanese people. The dining environment here is similar to that of Rengatei, retaining the Western style of Japan’s Westernization. This time, when I came to dine on a weekday afternoon, I didn’t expect the entire restaurant to be full and had to wait in line for 20 minutes. Both the service staff and customers in the restaurant are dressed appropriately and exude elegance in their every move. The restaurant environment is elegant and places great emphasis on cleanliness. The only small problem is that the location of the old store is very crowded, which is a common pattern among Western-style restaurants in Japan, but it also retains a sense of the times.”
Tasting coffee and Earl Grey tea in an old shop, paired with light sandwiches or cakes, is a great way to enjoy Ginza afternoon tea. However, this time I didn’t want to eat Ginza WEST’s ham sandwich, so I followed my own preferences and ordered Flo’s favorite Earl Grey tea. It has a fragrant tea aroma, is incredibly sweet, and you can even get refills!
